A penny for your thoughts (Views on essay writing)

Applications to our Principal's Awards 2013 are pouring in this week, and we'd just like to end the week by sharing some of our views about essay writing.

We've been asked time and time again, "Why is the essay  so important?"

Here's our Top 5 Reasons:

1. Through the essay, you get to show your personality, interests, maturity and thought process to the scholarship selection panel. Out of the thousands of applications we receive, the essay is one of the first few factors differentiating you from another candidate.

2. You get an early start to practise writing your personal statement or university admission essay, which are part of the requirements at some foreign universities. Students have been accepted to top-notch universities like Harvard or Yale University just based on the strength of their essay alone.

3. The essay is a great conversation starter during the scholarship interview. It enables the interviewer to get to know you before they even meet you, and find out more about the special, unique individual called 'YOU'.

4. It is a good way to discover more about yourself as you may learn more about your own interests and inclinations when you are doing your research for the essay.

5. You get to write about yourself for once, rather than the usual essay topics which revolve around your subjects in school.

What our Principal's Awards 2012 (last year's) recipients say:

"I think it is a good platform to look into one’s personality and hence suitability for the Principal's Awards scholarship."

"The topic was not too hard and I could express my own opinion through the essay."

"I did not have much difficulty in writing the essay because I have a very keen eye for journalism and I found the essay to be both challenging and fun to explore. It gave me a chance to convey my thoughts."

"I had plenty of ideas when I was given the topic. Besides that, it was also a great way to work on my writing skills."

"I treated the essay as one of my school project or course work in which I must deliver to the level that I am satisfied."

"I have always loved writing essays. The title gave me the freedom to express my thoughts on what it takes to be a leader of the future."

So, if you have not written your essay yet, we hope the above reasons provide a boost to get you moving! While our application deadline closes 16 July, we may, I repeat, just may consider an extension of the deadline, so you have a few more days to send in your application to us.

There'll be more updates next week, have a wonderful weekend!
